Life is really uncertain, isn’t it? We turn on the news and don’t know what to believe. We use social media and find multiple opinions and discoveries every day–actually every hour and even every minute. We live in a news-filled world where there is always a headline. News break. Urgent requests in the postal mail and our emails.
The clamor of news fades away when there is trouble on the horizon. That trouble manifests itself in many ways. A wayward child. A health concern with the doctor telling you they need more tests. A disease takes a turn for the worse in your body or someone you love and you don’t know where to turn. A spouse has told you they no longer love you and want out. Your body aches and you wonder why.
Right after my second husband, Blair, died suddenly, I remember getting word from an in-law cousin from South Africa. We had just visited that beautiful country and as all of us were, these cousins were shocked and shattered. I kept this card for a long time in my car and referred to it often. It simply quoted part of Psalm 91, a psalm full of hope and promise. It was this:
(1)Those who live in the shelter of the Most High
will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
(2)This I declare of the LORD:
He alone is my refuge, my place of safety;
he is my God and I am trusting him
(4)He will shield you with his wings.
He will shelter you with his feathers.
Look at these words carefully. Read them aloud. There’s a lot of promise in those words.
I am reminded of a song we sang in church when we used hymnals and sang the verses to the song. This one is a treasure and full of hope:
Under His wings I am safely abiding;
Though the night deepens and tempests are wild,
Still I can trust Him; I know He will keep me;
He has redeemed me, and I am His child.

Take heart friend as you face this day that is often full of trouble. I don’t know what you’re going through. Each of us has some kind of burden we are carrying. I encourage you, to go to your Bible and read Psalm 91. It will give you courage and give you strength. It did me on this fourth Friday in July.
Love you!!!
I memorized this psalm–91 –with my students last winter. It has been such a comfort for me. I repeat it over and over.
What a great one to memorize! Thanks for reading, Edie!
I memorized Ps 91 on a plane to Hawaii to help my daughter pack up & move to be with her army husband who was transferred from Hawaii to Japan. I recite that Ps every night after I go to bed. It has been a huge blessing to me since fear has been a huge struggle for me with my asthma & near death a couple times as a child.
You’re the second one to tell me they memorized this! Looks like I need to! Thank you Kathy!
