I’m working on a new project. I believe it is something I can do and want to do. But sometimes, as I study my project, I am daunted by the task. Yesterday, as I read my Bible, I came across this verse: Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans (Proverbs 16:3 NIV).

Today I looked at this verse again. The Hebrew word for “commit” means to “roll.” According to my source  If I commit–roll–or give something over–in complete dependence on God, He will establish, or bring about my plans. That doesn’t mean it will be easy.

Remember the story of Todd Beamer, the brave man, along with four other unnamed passengers, who were on the hijacked Flight 93? The hijackers’ planned to fly into Washington DC, crash and destroy buildings and people. Beamer snuck into a pantry while the hijackers were in the cockpit, and the first class section, and called a telephone supervisor named Lisa to tell her what was happening.  Below is part of the conversation.

Todd: We’ve hatched a plan. Four of us are going to rush the hijacker with the bomb. After we take him out, we’ll break into the cockpit. A stewardess is getting some boiling water to throw on the hijackers at the controls. We’ll get them….and we’ll take them out. Lisa, …..will you do one last thing for me?
Lisa: Yes…What is it?
Todd: Would you pray with me?
They pray: Our father which art in Heaven
Hallowed be thy name,
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
And forgive us our trespasses
As we forgive our trespassers,
And lead us not into temptation
But deliver us from evil
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory
Forever…..Amen
The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want…
He makes me to lie down in green pastures
He leads me beside the still waters
He restores my soul
He leads me in paths of righteousness
for His name’s sake
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death
I will fear no evil, for thou art with me…..
Todd: (softer) God help me…Jesus help me….(clears throat and louder)
Are you guys ready?……..
Let’s Roll……………………”
Todd Beamer said, “Let’s roll.”
Sometimes, we have to “roll” our purposes on the Lord and wait for the results. They don’t always work out the way we think they will happen, but our job is to commit/roll–give over to God–our plans. When we do that, He will establish them. Sometimes those plans are successful–the way we envisioned them to be. Sometimes, we are just being obedient to what God calls us to do and the results aren’t always what we want them to be.
Do you have plans for the day? For the future? Do you have a project you must complete? Will you join me in asking God to help in whatever project you may have?
Lord, as I start my day today, please help me to commit–roll over–my day to you. I make plans, and I’m asking You to help me as I do them. Please establish them according to Your will which is always perfect. I’m reminded of another verse in Proverbs: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight” (3:5-6). Help me to trust You in all ways. Thank you, in your name, Jesus, I pray. Amen.”
