I’m working on a new project. I believe it is something I can do and want to do. But sometimes, as I study my project, I am daunted by the task. Yesterday, as I read my Bible, I came across this verse: Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans (Proverbs 16:3 NIV).
Today I looked at this verse again. The Hebrew word for “commit” means to “roll.” According to my source If I commit–roll–or give something over–in complete dependence on God, He will establish, or bring about my plans. That doesn’t mean it will be easy.
Remember the story of Todd Beamer, the brave man, along with four other unnamed passengers, who were on the hijacked Flight 93? The hijackers’ planned to fly into Washington DC, crash and destroy buildings and people. Beamer snuck into a pantry while the hijackers were in the cockpit, and the first class section, and called a telephone supervisor named Lisa to tell her what was happening. Below is part of the conversation.
Todd: We’ve hatched a plan. Four of us are going to rush the hijacker with the bomb. After we take him out, we’ll break into the cockpit. A stewardess is getting some boiling water to throw on the hijackers at the controls. We’ll get them….and we’ll take them out. Lisa, …..will you do one last thing for me?
Lisa: Yes…What is it?Todd: Would you pray with me?They pray: Our father which art in HeavenHallowed be thy name,Thy kingdom come, thy will be doneon earth as it is in heaven.Give us this day our daily bread,And forgive us our trespassesAs we forgive our trespassers,And lead us not into temptationBut deliver us from evilFor thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the gloryForever…..AmenThe Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want…He makes me to lie down in green pasturesHe leads me beside the still watersHe restores my soulHe leads me in paths of righteousnessfor His name’s sakeYea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of deathI will fear no evil, for thou art with me…..Todd: (softer) God help me…Jesus help me….(clears throat and louder)Are you guys ready?……..
Let’s Roll……………………”
Wonderful guiding and encouraging words Shirley. Thank you!🌷❤
I’m glad! Thank you for reading!
Proverbs 3:5-6 has been a guiding verse for me, and your added illumination into the word”commit” makes it even more so. The heroism of Todd Beamer and others on that fateful flight so underscores that truth. From now on, the word “commit” requires me to “roll” toward obedience to Him. Thanks for sharing your wonderful insights, and God bless the heroes who gave their lives to save others no matter the cost.
Thank you Betty! I’m so glad!
