And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose (Romans 8:28 NIV).

One cherished Christmas Carol was written because of a broken pipe organ that could not be repaired by Christmas Eve. The priest, Joseph Mohr, quickly wrote the beautiful words to Silent Night on a piece of paper, brought it to the organist, Franz Gruber, and asked him to compose a song to go with the words. Gruber purposely wrote a simple melody that could be easily accompanied with a guitar and thus, the beautiful song that many churches conclude their Christmas Eve services with.

It might not have become so well known if it weren’t for the organ repairman who obtained a copy of the hymn, and began singing it throughout the Austrian Alps. It was sung by German congregations in America and in English form in 1863. Most people know the words of this beloved Christmas carol by heart.

Often things happen in our lives that we don’t understand. Like the organ that didn’t work on Christmas Eve. Can you think of a time when God worked for good in your life? One of my favorite verses in the Bible is Romans 8:28, quoted above.  I doubt that if the organ in that Austrian Alps church was not broken, Joseph Mohr wouldn’t have quickly written the words to Silent Night. Franz Gruber wouldn’t have composed the simple melody for the guitar that Christmas Eve. The organ repairman wouldn’t have seen the song and shared it with others. Yet, now it is one of the most treasured of all Christmas Carols..

Silent night, holy night!
All is calm, all is bright.
Round yon Virgin, Mother and Child.
Holy infant so tender and mild,
Sleep in heavenly peace,
Sleep in heavenly peace.

Silent night, holy night!
Shepherds quake at the sight.
Glories stream from heaven afar
Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia,
Christ the Saviour is born!
Christ the Saviour is born

Silent night, holy night!
Son of God love’s pure light.
Radiant beams from Thy holy face
With dawn of redeeming grace,
Jesus Lord, at Thy birth
Jesus Lord, at Thy birth  (Joseph Mohr 1792-1848).

This morning, we woke up to very icy conditions that seems to have affected most of our country. We are safe and warm and we are grateful. There are those who had plans to do last minute details. Rest in the Scripture  And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, May you be immersed in  the incredible gift of Christ coming to earth, this season.

I love acapella groups and this rendition is beautiful. Enjoy!
