This Monday, May 30th is Memorial Day, formerly called Decoration Day. The day to remember those who have died to protect our freedom. Originally this date was chosen because no significant battles were fought on this day. It was set aside to decorate the graves of the many who died after the Civil War–the war to end slavery in our nation. Later, it was changed to Memorial Day. This seems the day people go to decorate graves of loved ones, to remember.
I’m trying to think of what I can write that could give comfort on this day after the national tragedy that happened this week. Instead, I go to Scripture which always is right.
Change is always happening. But one thing gives me hope and I pray it gives hope to you as well, is found in Hebrews 13:8
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.
Let the words sink in. Can you think of anything else that is the same? Things are changing always.
The second law of thermodynamics says, in simple terms, entropy always increases.
So what is “entropy”? …everything in the universe eventually moves from order to disorder, and entropy is the measurement of that change.
Let’s go back to the verse, this time in the Amplified:
Jesus Christ is [eternally changeless, always] the same yesterday and today and forever.
Nothing can compare with this true statement. There is little we can put our trust in. We can’t put it in what’s going to happen the next moment. The next hour. The next day. “Things are changing always.” But one place we can put our trust? Our hope? You know the answer, but I’ll provide it for you. Jesus Christ is [eternally changeless, always]. Everything else changes–always.
When in counseling, I learned two words to not use in reference to my situation: Always and Never. One thing I can count on–Jesus Christ–is the same–eternally changeless, always. I can bank on it. You can too.
So this Memorial Day weekend, as you remember those who have given the ultimate sacrifice. Your loved ones. Keep your mind focused on Someone who never changes.
We remember.
