Change is in the air. Can you feel it? The air is warm, yes. But there’s an uncanny briskness to it as well. God has made seasons and the calendar tells us summer will be gone soon. The yellow school buses are trundling down the road with their load of children, excited, ready to absorb new information.
I admit at times I don’t like change much. I resist the changing seasons. I like the long, light evenings. The soft colors of summer.
Yet, I look forward to cozy, cooler evenings with darkness just beyond the twilight. To the brilliant colors autumn will bring.
It’s like that in life, too.Sweet babies in our arms for a brief moment in time, and then they are grown and gone. ….What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. (James 4:14B). How can that be? A mist? That’s really nothing, isn’t it?
So, as I resist change, reflect on the mist of my life that will vanish quickly, I realize I need to make the most of this day and the time I have left on earth. I will switch gears from the soft summer nights, to the cooler evenings that grow dark more quickly. To the sound of crickets and the need to wear a jacket.
Today, I’m going to enjoy a morning with my daughter and help her settle in her new home. I will enjoy conversation and closeness with her. We will laugh and delight in each other’s company.
This weekend is a last hurrah before school begins for some, so enjoy the freedom of this last weekend before fall begins. Yes, we’ll still have warm days–even some hot ones–but the cool will come. The leaves will change from green to red and orange.
Lord, I commit this day to You. Help me live this day to its fullest and not resist change for it is You who initiates everything, including change. The seasons that come and go. Thank you there is always something to look forward to. In life and in death. May I live this day for You.
That was beautiful! Thanks.
So true and a helpful and beautiful reminder to live each day to its fullest. Thank you Shirley.
