I call out to the Lord,
and he answers me from his holy mountain.

I lie down and sleep;
I wake again, because the Lord sustains me.
I will not fear though tens of thousands
assail me on every side (Psalms 3: 4-6 NIV).

My late mother–in-law had many fears. I didn’t always understand them and honestly, sometimes got irritated when she would say she was “afraid of ________”. But that dear woman, who lived to be 94,  fiercely loved her two sons and grandchildren, and most of all, she depended on her Lord to help her with her fears. I remember her quoting the above verse to help her “lie down and sleep”.

Blessed sleep

That verse reminds me, too, when I toss and turn and cannot sleep. We may not have “tens of thousands assailing us”, but we do have niggling fears that for sure I think about. What if something happens to_____________? Will I be OK if ________happens? and lately as I grow older, am I doing enough for God?

This passage reminds us that it is the Lord who sustains me–and you–that we don’t have to fear–in spite of “tens of thousands”. Those tens of thousands might be real enemies, or those fearful thoughts we all have.

I’m reminded of a hymn, “O God Our Help in Ages Past”,  written in 1719 by Isaac Watts, who was inspired by another psalm:

Lord, You have been our dwelling place in all generations.
Before the mountains were brought forth,
Or ever You had formed the earth and the world,
Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God (Psalm 90:1-2 NKJV).

Enjoy the music. This time, sung by an a Promise Keeper Choir. Enjoy the sights and sounds. More traditional at the beginning, then it changes to more contemporary. Keep listening.

“Thank you, Father God, that you are our help. Thousands of years ago, hundreds of years ago, and today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
