I can’t help but write about the special date tomorrow. No, it isn’t Pearl Harbor Day, or the eve of the second week of Advent, but our sixth wedding anniversary! I love the poem written by Robert Browning:

Grow old along with me! The best is yet to be, the last of life, for which the first was made. Our times are in his hand who saith, ‘A whole I planned, youth shows but half; Trust God: See all, nor be afraid!

We can’t fight old age. It comes to all of us. Sometimes I’m amazed at how my body does not work the way it used to. Yet, all I can do is keep moving. Eat right. And most important, as Robert Browning said, Trust God.

I’m reading through the gospel of Luke this Christmas season. A chapter a day until Christmas and I’ll have read Luke’s account of Jesus’ life on earth. As I read, I am amazed. The God who spoke the universe into being, yet allowed himself to be human rocks my soul. Jesus touched and healed the dirty and untouchable. He walked the earth and experienced humanity. Yet he is God. Wow! And then, yes, He died–for us. And of course, the best part, He rose from the dead and is alive. That’s the hope we have that one day, we will die, yet live eternally. For most of you, the story is familiar, yet it is so profound.

So, as our bodies fail us–whether we’re very young or older, we’re moving toward the last of life, for which the first was made.

I’m grateful for God working in my life. I’ve had to say goodbye–twice–to my most loved husbands. And because of those losses, I’m the stronger because I’ve had to depend on God to help me through those losses. And even better, brought me out to the other side of grief.

Jim and I don’t know how much time we’ll have left together. We are growing old for sure–the last of life, for which the first was made…..

Below, the joy we experienced that day 71 months and 30 days ago.

And we’re still experiencing it. Yes, we know there will be an end. We also know we can trust God, and not be afraid.

So we will do just that, Trust God.
