Whatever our decade of life, we are never not aging. Alice Fryling
We are in the age of emails and texts. Every time I receive an email from my doctor, it gives my age “_____year old Shirley Mozena.” I think who is that person who is that old?
My husband Jim and I have been reading a book together each night before we drop off to sleep called Aging Faithfully by Alice Fryling. She has given both of us food for thought about the aging process.
If you are in your twenties, or thirties, or forties, you probably don’t think about it much. You are young and there are many people older than you. Your parents. Grandparents. Aunts and Uncles. But as Fryling says, “we are never not aging,” so this is for you too.
What about it, though? What do we do about the passage of time? I am praying I can discover the positive parts of my station of age. Perhaps you can think about it for yourself.
Here’s one: I have more time. Instead of duties either as a young mother to my children and household, or after they were grown, to my full time job, I don’t have to get up early and race through my readings during my devotions with God. I can take my time.
This early morning, while on vacation and a different time zone, I read about how God offers us a relationship with him. When we believe in him–we are reborn and become his children and his heirs. We can address him as Father (John 1:12-13). Wow!
What does that have to do with aging, you might ask.
I would like to use this opportunity to learn how to approach this new season. I would like my relationship with God as his daughter, to be evident to others. Perhaps God gives us this opportunity as we grow older to understand further how much he loves us and who he is.
So, this morning, that’s what I’m going to do. I’m going to rest in my relationship with God, the Father. Jesus told his disciples to address him as our father (Luke 11:1-2). It’s part of the Lord’s prayer.
In that prayer, “Give us this day…”
We have an opportunity this day.
Would you like to join me in discovering some of the good we never expected in this growing old?
Let me know your thoughts about aging. Will you age gracefully? Faithfully?
“Father, as I approach this day, will you show me how to age properly? Help me fully understand how much you love me. Thank you that I can call you Father. The perfect One. In your Son’s name, Jesus. Amen.”
