Do you dream during the night? I do. I find there’s adventure and problems to solve throughout my nighttime slumber. Most often, I remember I dreamed, but I don’t recall what the dream was. Last night–or this early morning–I’m not sure, I dreamt about heaven and being prepared for it. As is my usual in the morning, I read from the Bible. Before listening to news. Before checking social media, I look at scripture.
I read in Genesis about Abram. The passage tells how he made an altar and worshipped God. How he called on the name of the LORD. I then read in another Old Testament passage where the believer is to “seek the LORD” and “seek his face always,” (1 Chronicles, 16:11). And lastly, I read in the same book, verses 34-35: to “give thanks to the LORD for he is good. His love endures forever.”
Those words confirmed for me what I needed to do with the dream I remembered from my night’s sleep. To seek the LORD. To seek his face always.
I moved on to the New Testament. I read about belief. Ephesians 2:8-9, says God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.
In our uncertain world, where we don’t know what next troubling thing will happen, we can turn to the One who is available. He was there with Abram when he left his familiar home to the unknown. He was there when the Israel kings searched and were seeking the Lord. He was with me in the good and hard times.
Then we are told to give thanks–for the goodness and enduring love of God.
In today’s uncertain times, it’s good to review what God did in the past. To Abram. To the kings of Israel. And then give thanks. Later, in the New Testament, we are reminded to believe. To believe Jesus was God in flesh to take away our sins, and then rose from the dead. We can have a personal relationship with the God of the Universe and the God-man, who died and rose again for us. We need only believe.
When those troubling blurbs from the media–tell about our world and rumors of disease, war, famine, high gas prices, I plan to turn back to the One who is true. Who can be believed. I can tell you from my own personal life, that is the only sure place to go. To God’s word. To pray to him. To thank him for the gift of salvation and a personal relationship with him. Most of all, the promise of eternity with him–that begins now when we believe.
