Green bean soup with bread and jam. Berry pie for dessert. What comfort food it was for us as we sat around the big table. We were together, three of my four siblings and our spouses. Our brother is on his way today.

One came all the way west from North Carolina, one from Seattle, one lives here in Arizona, and Jim and I from near Portland. We were tired, but glad to see each other. We laughed with each other—just as in the old days. We had comfort in familiar food. Comfort in each other. Acceptance. We each have our own opinions about politics, about life, about God. In my experience, I’ve been fortunate to enjoy family and share life with them.

I was struck by the thought that coming together as family is important, but how about God? Do I enjoy reading his word and praying as much as other things in life?

Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart (Psalm 37:4 NIV).

What does it mean to delight?

For me, I treasure my mornings with God. A Bible, cup of coffee (very essential) a notebook and pen is the best. That could be “delighting” in the Lord. The Bible has been my companion most of my life and I can’t imagine being without it. There are places in our world where owning a Bible or parts of it could mean death.

We don’t face that here in our country and how fortunate we are. But do we take our treasure of God’s word for granted at times? I do.

As we think about the coming of the promised Messiah this Christmas season, I’m going to focus on delighting in the Lord. Will you join me?
